TLS, one page, 6 x 8.25, personal letterhead, October 13, 1977. Wayne writes to Bill Kelly. In full: “I hate to keep putting you off. Maybe the next assignment I have, we can invite you on the set for a talk. It seems to be the only time I know for sure what my schedule will be. Wonder what the hell is eating Don ‘Red’ Barry? He was always asking me to do something for his many schemes. The last one was to appear with some ‘old timers’ on TV, which I refused—Number One, because I didn’t have time and Number Two, I didn’t particularly cotton to his wisdom in running my career. At any rate, I hope that before too long we’ll get to say hello.” The original recipient of the letter, Bill Kelly, was a prolific journalist and author who, after several attempts, was finally granted an interview with Wayne on November 28, 1978; Wayne died on June 11 of the following year. The interview, Wayne’s last, was published in South Bay magazine in July 1981 and in Kelly’s book/CD Empty Saddles. Accompanied by several pieces of documentation, including a copy of the interview as published in Remember magazine (February 1996), a CD copy of Empty Saddles, and reprints of approximately 20 photos taken at Wayne’s home on the day of the interview.
