Description

DRY LAND FOR THE STEAMBOAT PIONEER: FULTON buys a parcel of New Jersey real estate

American inventor, engineer, and entrepreneur (1765–1815) best known for designing the first commercially successful steamboat. His other endeavors included a commission from Napoleon that resulted in the first practical submarine, the Nautilus. Manuscript DS, three pages on two sheets, 7.5 x 12.5, November 3, 1809. An agreement between Fulton and the Jersey Company wherein Fulton purchases a parcel of land in the Town of Jersey, Bergen County, New Jersey, for the sum of $1,000, payable (without interest) by November 3, 1814. Accompanied by an antique portrait engraving. In very good condition, with partial separations to folds (a few tape repairs) scattered soiling and light staining, subtle show-through of ink, and light handling wear. The signature is bold, clean, and unaffected by any faults, and itself easily rates as fine. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
