Description

Rare ALS from the French symbolist pioneer

Influential nineteenth-century French writer (1821–1867) best known for his highly imaginative and experimental verse, including the seminal 1857 collection Les Fleurs du mal. ALS in French, signed “Ch. Baudelaire,” one page, 5.25 x 8, no date (bearing the pencil notation “vers 1859–60” in another hand.) Baudelaire writes to an unnamed friend. In full (translated): “I just had a chat with Mr. de Calonne. He finds totally acceptable your desire not to touch your brother’s novel. As for the issue of money, he pointed out to me, as I expected, that he is far less rich now than he was a year ago. Finally, you must go and settle this with him. In the morning or at night after dinner….” Intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold just touching “B” of signature) and a few subtle wrinkles, otherwise fine, clean condition. Material in Baudelaire‘s hand is most uncommon and of great desirability. R&R COA.
