Description

Reformer and abolitionist. Garrison campaigned against everything from liquor to prostitution to the treatment of Indians, and founded the famous anti-slavery journal The Liberator. ALS signed “Wm. Lloyd Garrison,” one page both sides, 5 x 7.5, May 2, 1874. Letter to Mr. Chace regarding an upcoming wedding. In part, “Should I come, I cannot promise to comply with your request, and yet I will not say no to it. Please have no expectation raised as to any prefatory remarks from me concerning marriage and its obligations; but if, after the Quaker idea, I feel moved in spirit to say something, I will certainly endeavor to do so.” In fine condition, with light show-through from text on reverse.
