Description

The invention that made him a millionaire: “The Pullman Company will make all necessary renewals and repairs to said cars”

American inventor and industrialist (1831–1897) best known for developing the first successful railroad sleeping car. LS signed “Geo. M. Pullman,” three lightly lined pages, 8 x 10.5, Pullman Palace Car Company letterhead, December 23, 1875. Pullman writes to M. E. Ingalls, President of the I. C. & L. Railroad. In part: “I am willing to make the following modification of the contract of Sept. 26, 1864, under which our cars are operated upon your road. In lieu of the provision … which requires the Railroad Company to ‘keep said cars in good running order and repair, including renewals of wornout parts’ the Pullman Company will … accept from your Company a mileage of three cents per car per mile for each mile run by the said cars upon your line of road between Cincinnati and Kankakee; and in consideration of this mileage the Pullman Company will make all necessary renewals and repairs to said cars running upon said line of road…. The two new cars intended for you are now ready and I shall order them to be sent to you to be put upon your road….” Slight trimming and file holes to left margin (the latter touching a few words) and a hint of mild soiling and handling wear, otherwise fine condition.
