Description

Commenting on a “very nice” map of Africa

British explorer, adventurer, diplomat, and author (1821–1890) best known for such exploits as sneaking, in disguise, into the forbidden city of Mecca and for his unexpurgated translations of the Kama Sutra and The Book of One Thousands Nights and a Night (aka The Arabian Nights). Scarce ALS signed “Richd. F. Burton,” one page, 4.25 x 5, “Arabic” letterhead, December 13 [no year]. Burton writes to E. Erlen. In part: “Your map is very nice. I shall take the liberty of suggesting that the west … about Kilwa might be filled in from Baron Van der Decken’s map, especially Kilwa Kivinja. Only don’t adopt German spelling….” Intersecting folds, light wrinkles (just touching first name) and a hint of very subtle soiling, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
