Matte-finish photo of LBJ with his hands folded, 6 x 7.5 on its original 9 x 12 card mount, signed and inscribed in black ink on the mount, “To Abe Fortas—With appreciation for your work on the Committee on Equal Opportunity in the Armed Forces, 1963–65, Lyndon B. Johnson.” LBJ appointed Fortas, a longtime friend, to the Supreme Court in 1965. Four years later, in 1969, Fortas resigned under pressure as the result of a scandal stemming from his acceptance of a $20,000 retainer from the family foundation of Louis Wolfson, a financier then under investigation for securities violations that eventually landed him in prison. The initiative LBJ refers to in the inscription, begun during the JFK administration, resulted in sweeping changes in military policy and proved to be one of the most important civil-rights reforms of the Johnson administration. Light toning to extreme edges of mount, otherwise fine, clean condition. A most historic association! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
