Matte-finish photo depicting LBJ standing at a podium bearing the presidential seal as Lady Bird shakes the hand of Abe Fortas at right, probably taken at the announcement of LBJ’s nomination of Fortas to the Supreme Court, 9.25 x 7.25 on its original 12 x 11 card mount, signed and inscribed in black ink on the mount, “To Abe—With the gratitude, respect and admiration of both of us, Lyndon B. Johnson.” LBJ appointed Fortas, a longtime friend, to the Supreme Court in 1965. Four years later, in 1969, Fortas resigned under pressure as the result of a scandal stemming from his acceptance of a $20,000 retainer from the family foundation of Louis Wolfson, a financier then under investigation for securities violations that eventually landed him in prison. Very faint brushing to a few words of inscription, a hint of very mild toning to extreme edges of mount, and tiny bumps to corners, otherwise fine condition. A most historic association! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
