Description

As Secretary of War

American military officer and politician (1808–1889) who, after serving as a senator and U.S. Secretary of War, was the first and only president of the Confederacy, from 1861 until its collapse at the end of the Civil War. Ink endorsement on a letter sent to Davis from Vicksburg by D. Wacker, one lightly lined page both sides, 8 x 10, February 26, 1855. Wacker’s letter reads, in part: “Allow me to address you as an acquaintance and frind [sic] upon a matter in which we here feel considerable interest. There are several men who desire the appointment of Superintendent of the Marine Hospital to be built at this place. Before I learned that Capt. Jno. Bobbs wanted the post I wrote a letter in favor of Capt. Balch. Balch is now lying at the point of death with consumption, and leaves me free to ask the appointment of Capt. Bobbs….” Davis writes: “Confidential: Referred for the information of the Sec. of the Treasy., Jeffer. Davis.” Intersecting mailing folds (small edge separations), a hint of mild soiling and toning, and faint show-through of text, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
