Description

Republican Party political appointee supported by Sherman to command the Mountain District, a military department created to include the Powder River country, through which the Bozeman Trail had been forged. When Carrington arrived with the Second Battalion, 18th Infantry, to garrison the new trail to the Montana goldfields, he underestimated Lakota and Cheyenne resistance to the incursion and invasion, and what became known as “Red Cloud’s War” began on July 9, 1866, Ink signature, “Henry B. Carrington, Col. USA, Prof. Wab. Col., Author,” and adding his birthplace and date, “Wallingford, Conn., March 2nd 1824,” on an off-white 5.75 x 4 sheet. Matted with a bust portrait of Carrington, and a small brass plaque, to an overall size of 13.75 x 22.5. In fine condition, with crease to bottom right, and some scattered mild foxing and ink flecks.
