Description

American military officer (1797–1863), nicknamed “Bull,” who was the oldest field commander on either side during the Civil War. Having previously served in the Black Hawk and Mexican-American Wars, and in an expedition against the Cheyennes, he led troops through the Peninsula and Maryland Campaigns, the Seven Days Battles, and the Battle of Fredericksburg. Ink signature, “E. V. Sumner, Brig. U.S.A.,” on an off-white 2.75 x .75 slip clipped from a check and affixed to a slightly larger slip. Matted and framed with a period engraving to an overall size of 11 x 16.5. Mild wrinkling and close trimming to top edge just touching “S”, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
