Description

American political leader from New York who served as a delegate to the Continental Congress. Leonard supported the American Revolutionary War through the militia, eventually becoming a Colonel. Early in his political career he was aligned with the patrician group of the large estates owners and commercial interests, but later became involved with the early evolution of the Democratic Party in New York. ALS signed “L. G.,” one page, 8.25 x 13, February 3, 1787. Letter to the president of the Continental Congress. In part, “I do myself the honor to acknowledge of your favor of the 3rd. January last conveying copy of an Act of Congress appointing me Commissioner of the Extra Chamber of Acct.…Please sir to tender my most grateful acknowledgements to Congress for this distinguished honor.” In fine condition, with horizontal folds, one affecting a single stroke of signature, scattered light toning and edge wear and a few wrinkles.
