Description

Once a president: Grant attempts to engineer an official appointment in a letter to one of his Executive Mansion successors

ALS signed “U. S. Grant,” two pages, 4.75 x 7.75, March 6, 1882. Grant writes to “the President” [Chester A. Arthur]. In full: “A vacancy existing in the Court of Claims bench, would not the appointment of Judge Morgan, Minister to Mexico, be a good one? Morgan is an able lawyer, has had experience as a Judge and is a thoroughly upright man. This would make a vacancy in the Mexican Mission for which Col. J. R. G. Pitkin has been as universally recommended…. I would be very glad to see Col. Pitkin fill the Mexican Mission, or any other position equally good….” Intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold to “U”), and a small red spot and a light strip of toning along left edge of the first page, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
