Description

“Those to whom the national commitment to social justice means the most”: LBJ praises a prominent civil rights advocate

Three items: 1) TLS as president, one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, December 4, 1965. LBJ writes to Berl Bernhard, executive staff director of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights from 1959–1963, an entity created by the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and managed by then-Senate Majority Leader Johnson. In full: “I want you to know how much I appreciate the extraordinarily fine job you and your associates did in putting together the civil rights planning session. You worked under tremendous pressure and against an extremely short deadline. That the session was a success is a tribute to your good judgment, hard work and dedication. This was a service to your country and your President for which I am deeply grateful.” 2) TLS as president, one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, June 7, 1966. Johnson writes to Bernhard. In full: “I want you to know how admiring I am of the job you and your colleagues on the White House Conference staff did last week, and in the months of preparation for the conference. You have served each of your clients well—most particularly those to whom the national commitment to social justice means the most. The gift of your time and good judgment was, I am sure, an expensive one; but I know you must consider it given in the best of causes. You have my deepest gratitude for all you have done, Berl.” 3) Pearl-finish 14 x 11 White House photo of LBJ shaking hands with Bernhard in the White House as Lady Bird and others look on, signed in the blank lower margin in black felt tip, “Lyndon B. Johnson,” and inscribed in a different calligraphic hand. In very good condition, with all three items mounted to heavy card, a touch of mild soiling and toning to letters, mailing fold of one letter lightly touching descenders of signature, light marginal soiling and staining to photo, and a few faint smudges to signature on photo. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
