Description

The statesman who wouldn’t sign the Declaration of Independence issues a land grant for someone who did

Lawyer and signer of the U.S. Constitution from Delaware (1732–1808) who also served as an officer during the Revolutionary War, Governor of Delaware, and Governor of Pennsylvania. Manuscript DS, one page on vellum, 15 x 14, October 5, 1785. A grant for a parcel of land called “Clearfield” issued to Thomas M[c] Kean. The assignee in question is evidently Thomas McKean (1734–1817), the Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Delaware who later served as Governor of Pennsylvania. The embossed paper seal remains mostly intact at upper left. In very good condition, with intersecting folds and light toning, soiling, and wrinkling. The signature is bold, dark, and otherwise unaffected. R&R COA.
