Description

On the waterfront, Victorian style

Canadian-born British shipping magnate (1787–1865) who founded the pioneering steamship line that still bears his name. ALS signed “S. Cunard,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, September 15, 1855. Cunard writes to D. Gregory in Jersey City. In part: “I find from my letter from New York that the Docks have filled up very much in consequence of the new works which you are carrying out above them—and we will have to dredge them out. This scheme by the terms of the lease falls upon us, although the necessity for doing it so soon after it was last done has been caused by your acts. One half of the North Dock is however your property—and the expence of dredging it belongs to the Jersey Company. It never has been from the beginning properly dredged…. When one side of the dock is dredged deeper than the other, it slides in in a short time…. I will feel much obliged if you will move the proper authorities in your company to attend to it, at the same time ours is done….” The adjacent leaf bears the address panel on one side and an endorsement by Gregory on the other. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, light wrinkling, a few stains, and light show-through of text (faintly visible behind signature). R&R COA.
