ALS signed “Charles (A. Lindbergh),” one page, 8.5 x 11, August 27, 1968. Lindbergh writes from Brazil to Pan Am Airlines executive Willis Player. Lindbergh was in Brazil representing the Worldwide Research Foundation during discussions with government officials on wildlife conservation programs along the Amazon. In full: “I enclose a letter to Ronald Gold, Pub-Rel director of Curtiss-Wright. Would you be good enough to complete the address and the envelope for me? He wants my authorization for some Curtiss-Wright Corp. history advertising in connection with the ‘Spirit of St. Louis’ and its ‘whirlwind’ engine. I am giving this with certain restrictions that I do not think will cause difficulty.” The Curtiss-Wright Corporation built the engine, a Wright Whirlwind JC-5, that powered the Spirit of St. Louis across the Atlantic for Lindbergh’s historic 1927 flight. In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds and two notations by the recipient. An unusual instance of Lindbergh actually penning the name of the aircraft that propelled him into history!
