Partly printed war-dated DS, signed “Abraham Lincoln” as president, one page on vellum, 13.25 x 16.5, August 8, 1861. A promotion for Charles O'Leary as Brigade Surgeon of Volunteers. Countersigned by Acting Secretary of War Thomas A. Scott. O’Leary’s obituary in the New York Times for June 23, 1897 notes that he was “one of the best surgeons in New England … formerly connected with the Faculty of St. Mary’s College, Emmittsburg, Md.,” and that “he acted as surgeon during the Civil War, and after peace was restored made a specialty of this branch of his profession.” In good to very good condition, with intersecting folds (small losses along folds, touching a few words of printed text), soiling and light wrinkling, hinging tape to reverse (affecting nothing), and offsetting of printed text touching signature and somewhat affecting legibility.
