Description

Unsigned document in Lincoln’s hand, one page, 7.75 x 12.25, June 2, 1854. A legal brief, comprising approximately 20 lines of text, filed in the circuit court of Vermilion County, Illinois. In part: “Jacob Delay, the defendant in a certain action of assumpsit pending in the circuit court of the country aforesaid, wherein Charles R. Daniels, suing for the use of Nathaniel Lyon, is plaintiff, being first duly sworn states on oath that he can not safely go to trial at the present term because of the absence of Abram Brower who is a material witness for him….” Accompanied by an early typescript from the Lincoln Library in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. In very good condition, with horizontal folds (edge separations, lightly touching a few words, tape-repaired from reverse), a few marginal chips, and mild toning and soiling.
