Description

“I’M OVERCOME”: Choked up by a tribute in Golfer magazine, JONES uses his pull in extracting a favor from President Eisenhower

Golfer (1902–1971) who, in 1930, became the only Grand Slam winner in the sport’s history, taking the U.S. and British Open and U.S. and British Amateur titles. Over the course of his career, he would win a total of four U.S. Open titles, five U.S. Amateur titles, and three British Open titles. TLS, twice signed “Bob,” one page, 7.75 x 11, Jones, Williams, Dorsey & Kane law firm letterhead, March 13, 1953. Jones writes to D. Scott Chisholm, a golf journalist. In full: “I wrote you several days ago telling you that I had not received your letter in time to get the President’s signature. I am now on the point of sending the copper strips up to Washington with a very special request that he take care of the matter. Before I send them, however, I want to get cleared up on one point. It seems to me that when you sent these strips for my signature you requested that some special sort of instrument be used and that the signature be produced in a certain manner. Would you please let me know what this is so that I can be sure the job is done right. Thanks ever so much for your fine tribute in The Golfer. You were very generous….” After signing, Jones adds a handwritten postscript, which he signs “Bob”: “When I dictated the above, I had only glanced at the magazine. Now I’ve really looked at it [and] I’m overcome. Will write again when I recover.” In very good condition, with mild wrinkling and handling wear, a few faint marginal stains, trimmed right edge, and a diagonal creases across the top portion of the letter. Auction LOA Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
