At the 1913 US Open at the Country Club, Francis Ouimet (1893–1967), a former caddy, changed the perceptions of an entire sport with a stunning triumph that captured the imagination of sports fans across the globe—and swept away the notion that golf was a stuffy game for rich old men. Ouimet was American golf’s first great hero, and he remains one of the most beloved figures in the history of the sport. TLS signed “F. Ouimet,” one page trimmed along the left edge to 7.5 x 11, John A. Franks Company letterhead, January 2, 1952. Ouimet writes to D. Scott Chisholm, a sports journalist. In part: “Under separate cover I am mailing your copper sheet with my autograph, and I trust it will reach you before the presentation on the sixth….” In very good condition, with trimming as noted, intersecting mailing folds, and a touch of mild wrinkling and soiling.
