DS, three pages on onionskin, 8.5 x 13, January 6, 1947. An assignment and release related to a literary property evidently owned in part by his deceased wife, actress Carole Lombard. In part: “The undersigned, Clark Gable, as surviving husband and successor in interest to Carole Lombard, deceased, does by these presents and for and in consideration of the sum of ten thousand dollars sell, transfer, bargain, convey and assign unto Helen Deutsch … all of his [and Lombard’s] right … in and to that certain literary property entitled ‘But Is It Love?’ and also entitled ‘Object Matrimony’….” Gable has twice signed in full on page two, one signature representing his own interest, the other on behalf of Lombard. Lombard died on January 16, 1942, when the plane she was traveling in en route to a war bond rally crashed into Mount Potosi near Las Vegas, killing all 22 passengers.
