“HAVING FAITHFULLY SERVED THE UNITED STATES”: WASHINGTON signs a Revolutionary War discharge

Partly printed DS, signed “G: Washington,” one page both sides, 8 x 13, June 7, 1783. A military discharge for Brampton Hitchcock of the 2nd New York Artillery Regiment, who served beginning on April 10, 1777. Countersigned “J[onathan] Trumbull, Jun.” as secretary, “James Bradford” as adjutant, and “John Lamb Colo.” (awarding Hitchcock the Badge of Merit). Hitchcock was born in Wallingford, Connecticut in 1758 and died in 1804. In overall very good condition, with document tipped to larger sheet along left margin; several intersecting folds (vertical fold to “W”; horizontal fold to top portion of signature; pinholes at intersections; partial separations, reinforced from reverse, touching top portions of about three letters), wrinkling, scattered mild soiling, and two circular seal impressions near lower edge. The signature is otherwise clear and dark. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
