Description

Distinguished statesman (1777–1852), longtime member of Congress, and three-time presidential candidate who became known as the “Great Compromiser” for his central role in the brokering of hot-button, slavery-related issues prior to the Civil War. Third-person ALS signed in the text “H. Clay,” 7.25 x 2.5, January 31, 1841. In full: “H. Clay’s respects to Mr. Gilpin; with the opinion of Chancellor Buckner, what he requests may be returned to him at the Supreme Court. He requests also that Mr. G. will inform him if it be understood that the Mississippi case is to be heard tomorrow?” Accompanied by a period portrait engraving. Faint intersecting folds and tape remnants to reverse, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
