Description

Soon-to-be-President Wilson “conscientiously” turns down an offer: “It would be impossible ... to perform the duties of such a Trusteeship in the way that would certify ... my own conscience”

TLS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 6 x 8, personal letterhead, December 3, 1910. Wilson, as president of Princeton University, writes to Miss C. E. Mason. In part: “You have paid me a very high compliment, which I deeply appreciate, and I wish most unaffectedly that I could give my natural impulse to accept the honor of serving as one of the Trustees of your school under your will. I know only too well, however, that it would be impossible for me with my present engrossments and engagements to perform the duties of such a Trusteeship in the way that would certify either my own conscience or the needs of the school…. I know that you will appreciate the force of these reasons upon my own conscience….” In fine condition, with a touch of mild wrinkling and subtle soiling. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
