Description

That Christmas spirit: “Both our aesthetic and our material desires being gratified!”

ALS, two pages, 5.75 x 7.5, Sagamore Hill letterhead, December 27, 1915. Roosevelt writes to prominent financier Clarence Hungerford Mackay (1874–1938). In full: “You are very kind and thoughtful; and Mrs. Roosevelt and I thank you both for the beautiful orchids and the delicious turkey—both our aesthetic and our material desires being gratified! Wasn’t that a pleasant dinner at Judge Gary’s? [This was Roosevelt’s nickname for his friend, industrialist Elbert Henry Gary.] I was much amused at the fun the papers made over it. With renewed thanks, Faithfully yours….” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Roosevelt’s hand. Mailing fold lightly touching signature, otherwise fine, clean condition. An extraordinarily bright and fresh example! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
