“It is the President’s plan to bring a just and peaceful end to the fighting in Vietnam”: Five letters from soon-to-be President Gerald Ford

Five TLSs signed “Jerry Ford” as congressman, each one page, 8 x 10.5, congressional letterhead, 1968–1973. Ford writes to Jerry Hrdlicka in Chicago. A few excerpts follow. June 19, 1968: “I wish to acknowledge and thank you for your most recent letter with its comments about the Johnson Administration….” July 15, 1969: “As you know, Secretary of the Treasury David Kennedy has suggested that wage-price controls should possibly be considered if other means fail to hold down the cost of living….” November 3, 1969: “Thank you sincerely for your recent letter and enclosed clipping concerning the views expressed by some college students concerning the conduct of the war in Vietnam….” April 22, 1970: “It must be pointed out that when President Nixon took office in January of 1969, he inherited a war that had begun and expanded during two previous Democratic administrations. When Mr. Nixon and his advisors were developing a change in policy toward the war, I am sure that an escalation of the fighting and a military victory was carefully considered. However it was the President’s decision to Vietnamize the war by decreasing American participation…. America is thus doing all it can to deescalate the war both on the ground and at the Paris peace talks. I supported President Johnson in his efforts to find an end to the costly and unpopular Vietnam war. I also wholeheartedly support President Nixon. In his speech on April 20, Mr. Nixon said that a conclusion to the fighting is in sight. Hopefully an end to the war is near….” February 19, 1973: “I appreciated hearing from you and knowing of your interest in proposed legislation relating to the sale of vitamin supplements….” A few mailing folds touching signatures, otherwise very fine, fresh condition. R&R COA.
