Mother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (consort of Queen Elizabeth II). In 1930, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and committed to a sanatorium. She stayed in Athens during the Second World War, sheltering Jewish refugees, for which she is recognized as ‘Righteous Among the Nations’ at Yad Vashem. After the fall of King Constantine II of Greece and the imposition of military rule in Greece in 1967, she was invited by her son and daughter-in-law to live at Buckingham Palace in London, where she died two years later. Vintage 8.5 x 11 full-length seated portrait photo affixed to its original 11 x 14 Geo. Boucas photographer’s mount, signed and inscribed in pencil on the photographer’s mount, “In grateful remembrance of saving me from drowning while bathing at Mon Repos, Corfu,” and signed on the image in pencil, “Alice, 1915.” Accompanied by a 1987 TLS from Buckingham Palace, returning the photo after it had been shown to Philip. Ironically, if Alice had not been saved from drowning as the inscription states, Philip would never even have been born and history would undoubtedly have taken a different course! In fine condition, with scattered light toning and foxing to edges of mount, not affecting image or inscription. R&R COA.
