Self-educated African-American botanist (circa 1864–1943) who became a leading expert in agricultural science, most notably relating to the cultivation and practical uses of the peanut. ALS signed at the top of the first page (continued from the reverse) “G. W. Carver,” one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, Tuskeegee Institute letterhead, April 7, 1928. Carver writes to Mr. Hardwick. In part: “The spring here has truly opened up, the expanding leaf, the opening flower, the singing birds and the humming bees, are among the many evidences of His majesty, glory, and power. I always think of you and other members of my dear ‘Blue Ridge’ young men, real Christian young fellows, striving to live the ‘Golden Rule’ way of life, which is indeed the Jesus way of life. God is surely manifesting himself in your work there, for which I praise His holy name…. My friend’s letter was not published with my permission, they slipped it away from me and got his permission. He is such a remarkable man, a real Christian gentleman. He has what it known as the ‘Big Brother’s Bible Class,’ which takes in several hundred individuals. They have just completed a drive for a building for the ‘Salvation Army,’ and raised at one concert $1,200. He was elected to office this year without opposition…. My schedule calls for U.P.I. April 22nd…. I may be in Iowa in June. The Pres. of Simpson College has ast [sic] the privilege of conferring upon me the honorary degree of Dr. of Science at their commencement….” Light scattered toning and a few tiny chips and tears, otherwise fine condition.
