“Gold Hunter”: 1843 ship’s papers for a whaling vessel

Partly printed DS as president, signed “J. Tyler,” one page on vellum, 11.5 x 14.75, October 27, 1843. A scalloped-top ship’s papers issued to Albert Wood of Massachusetts, master or commander of the ship Gold Hunter, “mounted with no guns” and “navigated with twenty-four men.” Other contemporary documents issued to the same ship and captain indicate that the Gold Hunter was about to embark on a whaling voyage. Countersigned by H. S. Legaré as secretary of state. The embossed paper seal remains intact at lower left. Matted and framed with an image and engraved plaque to an overall size of 19.5 x 32. Intersecting folds (vertical fold lightly touching “T” of last name) and light scattered wrinkling, otherwise fine, clean condition. Tyler’s signature is large and dark.
