Partly printed DS, one page on vellum, 15.25 x 19, July 5, 1884. A promotion for Andrew K. Smith as surgeon with rank of lieutenant colonel. Countersigned by Robert T. Lincoln [son of Abraham Lincoln] as secretary of war. The blue paper seal remains intact at lower left. Period framed to an overall size of 20 x 24. In very good condition, with document affixed to same-sized piece of early mat board (slightly bowed), intersecting folds (just touching tops of signatures), light scattered soiling and toning, and subtle spreading and slightly irregular adhesion of ink.
