Boldly penned mailing panel, 5 x 3, addressed in Washington’s hand to “The Hon. John Jay, New York,” and franked at lower left, “Go: Washington.” The panel also bears a perfectly clear strike of a hand stamp reading “Alex, April 21.” The sheet is docketed on an integral flap in Jay’s hand, “Gen. Washington, 15 Ap. 1788,” and also bears a mostly intact red wax seal. Considered one of the founding fathers of the United States, Jay served in the Continental Congress, and was elected President of that body in 1778. During and after the American Revolution, he was a minister to Spain and France, in which capacity he helped to fashion American foreign policy and to secure favorable peace terms from the British and French. From 1784 to 1790, Jay served as the second Secretary of Foreign Affairs, an office which after 1789 became Secretary of State. In fine condition, with a central vertical fold, scattered faint soiling, and a well-done professional repair to a trivial tear to top edge. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
