Description

Kenton defends himself against fraud charges in a land deal

Kentucky frontiersman. He was active in the defense of the frontier - he is credited with saving Boone’s life during an Indian attack at Boonesburough. DS, one page both sides, 8 x 12.5, September 12, 1810. Legal document regarding a bill of complaint against Kenton over a land transaction. In part, “He says, that it is true he did purchase of Richard Wood a tract of land…for which he paid a full and fair price; it is also true that he has since sold said tract of land to the other deft…Your deft. denies that when he purchased of Wood; paid the consideration; and received the title, he had any knowledge that the Commonwealth had any lien or claim of a lien on the premises…He denies all fraud with which he stands charged.” Signed at the conclusion by Kenton, with an endorsement by William Stevens at the bottom. Integral second page bears two additional endorsements. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through opening stroke of signature, a few small fold separations, and some light toning and soiling. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
