Description

Ford rallies behind Nixon’s Vietnam plan: “Mr. Nixon is de-Americanizing the war and has adopted a policy of Vietnamization.”

TLS signed “Jerry Ford,” two pages, 8 x 10.5, Congress of the United States letterhead, October 20, 1969. Letter from Minority Leader Ford about Richard Nixon’s Vietnam policies. In part, “I can assure you that President Nixon is working diligently to end the war in Vietnam…President Kennedy first sent combat troops into Vietnam…Since becoming President, Mr. Nixon has turned the war around in the sense that we are withdrawing troops and no longer sending them to Vietnam in increasing numbers…Battle casualties have also been reduced…Mr. Nixon is de-Americanizing the war and has adopted a policy of Vietnamization. Vietnamization offers the best prospect for bringing our men home quickly while achieving our interests in Vietnam. It is a new policy initiated and being carried out by President Nixon. It calls for a stronger economy, a stronger policy for internal security, a stronger government, and stronger military force on the part of the South Vietnamese…The United States does stand ready to end the fighting…Mr. Nixon has changed the course of the war.” In fine condition, with a horizontal fold through signature, and a staple hole to top left. R&R COA.
