Rare woven silk souvenir textile commemorating the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, 6 x 9.75, the off-white ground featuring vignettes of George Washington, an eagle, American flags, the Exhibition Hall, and various exhibits, the perimeter with a blue fringe, signed and inscribed in ink “To my friend Thos. Clark, U. S. Grant.” During the Civil War, the recipient was chief of staff of Grant’s Army of the Tennessee. In good condition, with intersecting creases, typical slight fading to colors, faint soiling and a few stains, and tears and small losses at top and bottom edges (losses to fringe as well). The majority of the image remains clean and unaffected, Grant’s writing is quite clear and distinct, and, properly framed, the item will display most handsomely. Unique! R&R COA.
