Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts (1744–1814) who later served as vice president under James Madison. His name entered the language as a result of his support of politically advantageous redistricting, which became known as “gerrymandering.” Third-person ALS, one page, 6.75 x 4, March 22, 1789. Gerry sends a dispatch from New York. In full: “Mr. Gerry will be much obliged to Colo. Hodgden if he will forward the inclosed letter, & inform him of the names of the master & vessel by which the letters are sent, when she is to sail, & where bound.” In very good condition, with light intersecting folds (clean, short edge separations, touching a few words of text, with early repair to reverse), a few areas of mild toning (lightly touching tops of a few words in first line), and a few subtle spots of thinning to top margin.
