Superb ALS signed “G. W. Carver” (near the top of the first page, continuing from the reverse) one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, Tuskeegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead, December 23, 1930. Carver writes to Beddy Porter at the Shelling Department of the Huston Peanut Company in Columbus, Georgia. In part: “The little picture is so crude, my only excuse for sending it, was the fact that it was made from Ga. material. Your kind sense of values I was confident would catch the paint at once. I have cut and dressed two small pieces from the large stalactite. They are pretty but too porous…. It may get better as I go into it further. I hope we can find just what we want as I would like to make a set for a ring for you and one for a La Valliere or whatever she wishes to make out of it. I am sure we can find pieces solid enough. I have some beautiful pieces from Ala. but I am anxious to make them from Ga. material…. I am looking forward to next year with the most pleasant anticipation, as I believe we will be able to not only complete what we have begun but discover new things and work out plans whereby the farmer can be helped. I want you to believe me very sincere when I say that I have never had more helpful and beneficial contact with any one during the whole year than with you and Mr. Burry. I believe you and Mr. Burry with what little assistance I could give you have made and are yet making a very distinct contribution to one of America’s foremost industries, the peanut. This coming year, we hope to make new discoveries and codify our results, and give it to the farmer.
