Description

Wild West down East: Cody complains of poor attendance at his show at Boston, citing competition from the likes of “big base ball games,” and recounts a visit with Reginald Vanderbilt in Newport

ALS signed “W. F. Cody,” one page, 8.5 x 11, gilt-embossed Buffalo Bill’s Wild West letterhead letterhead, June 25, 1907. Cody writes from Newport to J. T. McCaddon, financial manager of the Wild West Show. In part [his spellings retained]: “Thanks for your letter. Yes, the hot weather hurt our Boston week. But not so much as the big local attractions. And the closeing of all school. Harvard exersizes daily big base ball games. And the openening of all the summer parks. Providence done fine but this town is very quiet the money people are note here yet—the backward spring &c—no one has any money here yet. Besides it’s an awful bad night. So foggy & misty. We can’t see across the arena. I have been highly entertained today by Reginal[d] Vanderbilt. Lunched with him & friends at his club & between the shows. He took me & party of his friends out to his great horse farm. Mrs. Vanderbilt and friends were to ride in the coach to night but the weather is too bad. Don’t forget about next week. I must meet so [sic] obligations….” Accompanied by an unsigned carbon of McCaddon’s reply to Cody, mentioning Cody’s request for a loan and lamenting the poor turnout at the shows in Fall River and Bedford. Intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold to “F”), and small stain and file hole touching one word of header, otherwise fine, clean condition. R&R COA.
