Description

Taft writes of Justice Holmes’ wife’s passing, “the Judge is very brave and does not propose to yield, and really the Court is his life and is his first consideration now.”

TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, May 4, 1929. Letter to an acquaintance. In part, “Of course the death of Mrs. Holmes will be a great blow to the Justice, because their lives were so much united…but the Judge is very brave and does not propose to yield, and really the Court is his life and is his first consideration now…I don’t agree with you that we ought to give up the opportunity to have a Judge to succeed Winslow now, because I am inclined to think that we may do better now than later…I am very much interested in the legislation that Caffey took so much interest in, but I am afraid we may have a fight about it, the sooner, the better, for it is perhaps the most important legislation with reference to court procedure pending in Congress.” In fine condition, with punch holes to left edge, and intersecting folds, one through small portion of signature. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
