Description

The first major engagement of the Spanish-American War: “We are all elated over the great news of Dewey’s victory at Manilla”

TLS signed “Benj. Harrison”,” one page, 8 x 10.25, personal letterhead, May 2, 1898. Harrison writes to General Charles E. Manderson in Omaha. In part: “It will not be possible for me to accept the invitation to deliver an address at the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition. I have undertaken some professional work that will require every moment of my time. I shall have to carry it with me into the woods this summer, and it is absolutely impossible for me to accept any invitations to deliver addresses…. This is the second summer of our little girl and we shall need to keep her either on the seashore or up in the woods until pretty late in the fall. We are all elated over the great news of Dewey’s victory at Manilla [sic]. I have had undaunted faith in our ships and their crews, and I hope we are to escape even those slight and temporary reverses which so many thought possible….” The Battle of Manila Bay, during which the American naval forces led by Commodore George Dewey routed the Spanish Pacific squadron in the first major engagement of the Spanish-American War, took place a day earlier, on May 1. Light intersecting mailing folds (vertical folds touching a few letters of last name), a few mild wrinkles, and staples holes, otherwise fine, clean condition. R&R COA.
