“Only through a broadening of the educational base ... do we have any hope of achieving a permanent peace”: Weeks before V-E Day, Ike declines to lend his name to a home-front promotional effort

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, Supreme Headquarters letterhead, March 30, 1945. Ike writes to A. F. Munroe, Promotion Manager of the Detroit Times. In part: “Needless to say I am in complete sympathy with your purpose of encouraging boys and girls of today to acquire an education. I feel that only through a broadening of the educational base throughout the world, coupled with a free exchange of news and information, do we have any real hope of achieving a permanent peace. Nevertheless, I must decline to permit you to use my name publicly in furthering your campaign. This is for the reason that I receive many requests or suggestions of a similar nature and in some instances it is obvious that the proposed venture is tinged with commercialism. While your own proposition is without doubt completely altruistic, I am in no position to judge as between those that seem to me to be on the borderline. Consequently, I have had to adopt the practice of declining to permit the use of my name except for such projects that are definitely in support of the war effort….” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Small corner bend at top right and light wrinkling to left margin, otherwise fine, bright condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
