Ink signature, “Very respectfully, Dear Madam, Your obt. servt., Z. Taylor, Majr. Gel., U.S. Army,” on a pale blue 4.25 x 2.25 slip clipped from the closing of a letter to Mrs. William Hathaway in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The slip, together with the similarly sized address panel in Taylor’s hand (postmarked Baton Rouge, January 3; ca. 1840s), are affixed to the same off-white 7 x 8.5 card. Taylor had purchased an estate near Baton Rouge ca. 1840; the Hathaways were one of New Bedford’s most prominent families. Accompanied by a 19th-century portrait engraving. Faint intersecting folds (lightly touching signature) a few light spots to signature slip, otherwise fine condition. The writing is exceptionally clear and bold throughout. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
