Description

Buck jokingly dismisses a “violent” call for her writings to be banned from the mail: “I am quite aghast at being so obscene!”

ALS, two pages both sides, 7 x 10.25, dated in pencil in another hand November 18, 1932. Buck writes to Mr. Walsh. In part: “I forgot to ask you to tell me what you want me to talk about at that publishers luncheon or dinner…. [On Friday and Saturday] I met a great number of interesting people [including] John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who stayed by me nearly all day Saturday and so gave me opportunity to observe the American capitalist first hand!… He was extraordinarily pleased at my very favorable review in the Christian Century…. By the way, I heard there was a very violent letter in that weekly last week from a lady in the mid-west, who feels I ought to be banned from the mails in U.S.A. because of obscenity. I am quite aghast at being so obscene … but perhaps her letter will be good advertisement!… And now a few things I should like your advice on…. The enclosed letter [not present] is like several I have received. Why do these universities wish to give this degree, is there any advantage in receiving it, and how should I answer? My inclinations are against receiving one honorary degree from a university I do now know and with which I have no connection…. I have a letter from E— Carter, the editor of a negro magazine called Opportunity, and a group of what he calls ‘Outstanding negro women in New York City’…. They want me to come and ‘say a few words of encouragement … toward creative achievement’….” After signing, Buck adds a brief postscript which she signs with her initials. Mild scattered soiling and handling wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
