Following Hayes’s election in 1876, Comley was appointed Minister to Hawaii. In part: “Mrs. Hayes goes Monday to visit a sick relative in Pickaway, and the week following we are engaged with friends in Cleveland. So to make sure of our time together, I will go with Mrs. H. Monday to Columbus—having some business with the Platts, will be at Gen. Mitchell’s a day or two when we can begin to catch up. Nothing preventing let us met at Gen. Mitchell’s Monday evening….” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed by Hayes. In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds (lightly touching “B”) and faint scattered offsetting of ink from premature folding. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
