Description

BETWEEN-THE-SHEETS DIPLOMACY: LINCOLN appoints an ambassador while confined to bed with smallpox

Partly printed DS, signed “Abraham Lincoln,” one page, 16.25 x 11.75, November 28, 1863. An appointment for Thomas Kirkpatrick of New York as U.S. Consul at Nassau, New Providence [Bahamas]. Lincoln had contracted varioloid (a mild form of smallpox) a week earlier and was confined to his bed in the now-famous Lincoln Bedroom for several days, from November 26 until the first week of December. On December 8, a little more than a week after signing this appointment, Lincoln issued the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction, well known to scholars and collectors as the “Oath of December 8, 1863” with which Lincoln endorsed scores of documents during the remainder of his presidency. Countersigned by William H. Seward as Secretary of State. The embossed paper seal is intact at lower left. Matted with a portrait to an overall size of 30.5 x 17.25. Intersecting folds (partial separations with expert reinforcements to reverse; vertical fold to one letter of Lincoln’s first name), faint offsetting of printed text, and a few mild wrinkles and tiny spots, otherwise fine, bright condition. Exceptionally clean and visually appealing! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA. Oversized.
