Description

Chaplin thanks actress June Havoc “a thousand-fold” for her performance and praises the “most interesting and humorous” books of her sister, stripper Gypsy Rose Lee

ALS, signed “Charlie,” one page, 7.25 x 10.25, personal letterhead, 1948. Chaplin writes to actress June Havoc. In full: “I was very moved by your sweetness, and of course the books are wonderful—couldn’t have fallen into more appreciative hands. As for my small contribution to the Circle Players [evidently in a directing capacity], your performance has repaid it a thousand-fold. Love to you both….” After signing, Chaplin adds a postscript, which he signs with his initials: “Read Gypsy’s books [i.e., by Havoc’s sister, stripper/actress Gypsy Rose Lee]. Thought them most interesting and humorous.” Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope. Several moderately heavy folds (one through the signature) and affixed to a piece of mat board, otherwise fine condition. This is the first Chaplin handwritten letter we’ve ever seen. PSA/DNA Auction LOA and R&R COA.
