ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, Gad’s Hill Place letterhead, August 26, 1865. Dickens writes a letter of introduction for his son to Irish novelist Charles Lever (1806–1872). In full: “The naval officer of gigantic stature who will (I hope) present this note to you, is my son, bearing a high character in the service. He is naturally desirous to shake hands with a famous writer who is his father’s friend. And I know you will good naturedly gratify him if you can. Affectionately always….” Among Dickens’s achievements in the year of writing was the completion of his final novel, Our Mutual Friend, which had been serialized in 19 monthly installments.
