Description

Elected Vice President of the United States in 1856 on the Democratic ticket with James Buchanan as President; unsuccessful candidate for President in 1860; elected to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1861, until expelled by resolution of December 4, 1861, for support of the rebellion; entered the Confederate Army during the Civil War as brigadier general and soon became a major general; Secretary of War in the Cabinet of the Confederate States from January until April 1865. ALS, one page, lightly-lined, 8 x 10, June 16, 1856. Letter to Emauel B. Hart, Democratic congressman from New York. In part, “I acknowledge with pleasure your friendly letter of the 11 inst. My position is *** to me but nothing connected with it gives me more pleasure than to be remembered by my old friends. I shall be happy to hear from you…after the Republicans hold their convention and matters take shape in New York.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and some scattered light wear and toning to edges.
