Scarce ALS in French, two pages, 5.25 x 3.5, no date. Gris writes to an unidentified friend. In part (translated): “Here we are at last in the country. And I assure you that I am very well. The house we’re living in is an old hunting lodge which sits all alone on the road a kilometer from the village of Beaulieu. The countryside is charming and picturesque, and every single house is a masterpiece of time. The houses along the Indre are fantastic, so roughly built and all so different from one another. And then in Loches the chateaux and old residences are impressive…. I’m leading the life of a rustic. I get up with the sun and go to bed with the hens. And above all the air is pure and not infected with gossip and intrigues like in Paris….” After signing, Gris adds a postscript: “Respectful regards to Madame and Mademoiselle Level.” On the reverse of the first page, Gris has also added: “Adresse: Juan Gris,m Beaulieu pres Loches (Indre et Loire).
