Madison sends the Laws of the United States to Georgia

Fourth President of the United States (1809–1817), and one of the most influential Founding Fathers of the United States. Considered to be the ‘Father of the Constitution,’ he was the principal author of the document. In 1788, he wrote over a third of the Federalist Papers, still the most influential commentary on the Constitution. As a leader in the first Congresses, he drafted many basic laws and was responsible for the first ten amendments to the Constitution. LS, one page, 8 x 10, April 22, 1807. Letter, sent by Madison as Secretary of State, to the Governor of Georgia. In full, “Agreeably to an Act of Congress entitled “An Act for the more general promulgation of the Laws of the United States, passed 8 March 1795, and the acts in addition thereto passed on the 21 March 1799, and on the 24th March 1804, I have transmitted to the Collector of Customs at Baltimore 228 copies of the Laws of the United States, 1st Session 9th Congress, being the proportion for the State of Georgia, with a request that he would forward them to your Excellency.” In good to very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered toning, show-through from docketing on reverse, and some chipping to top edge.
